One of Savannah's favorite stories involves the life of Florence Martus (1868-1943) who was known as the Waving Girl. Legend has it that Florence fell in love with a handsome young sailor from a distant port (some say Greece or Italy) who asked her to marry him upon his return to Savannah, then sailed off in to the horizon. She never saw him again, but took up the practice of waving her long apron to greet each ship which entered Savannah's harbor. This went on for 44 years! Located at the eastern end of River Street, overlooking the Savannah River, the Waving Girl Statue by renowned sculptor Felix De Weldon depicts Florence with her loyal collie.
